Specifies intended learning outcomes Lesson Plan Learninng outcomes were specified as ability outcomes for 3 levels of students. The outcome “be able to be acquainted with new words” is a bit vague and needs to be given more context.  In Part

Observation

The group appears to comprise 3 levels of learning from beginners through to entry level 2. The learning outcomes are differentiated to accommodate this.  Yes
Selection and organisation of content  Observation The recap focused on previously used terms and functions. This session introduced concepts of “centre”, justify, underline, “multiple print” “date & time” and “indent”. I was unsure of why these functions were being introduced at this time or how they fit in to the scheme of work as a whole. The learning outcomes for level 2 were not covered in the whole group presentation –Have these been covered previously and are they reflected in the set task? In Part
Selection of strategies Observation Chosen strategies included whole group work and demonstration. Students then worked on set tasks with tutor providing one to one support and advice.  Yes
Selection of resources capable of challenging sexism and racism Observation Main resources used were P.C.s, printed worksheets and the whiteboard. The single P.C. screen was inadequate for the purposes of demonstration – you should maybe think of alternative approaches e.g. small group demonstrations. (Ideally you need a data projector) Yes
Organisation of environment Observation Session takes place in a small I.T. room – a bit crowded for so many people. You need to be more assertive in getting the students to face you when giving presentations, instructions etc. Yes
Ensures health and safety of learners Observation Health & Safety I assume are covered as part of the introduction to the course although this is not indicated in the scheme of wrok. There seemed to be no major health and safety issues for this session.
Assesses the learners’ progress through a combination of formal and informal techniques ObservationAssessment tasks. Informal assessments comprise asking questions – this is useful but the process could have been more targeted.Formal assessment was completion of set tasks Yes
Ensures that some appropriate learning takes place Observation Appropriate learning was taking place – students were able to apply learning to completion of tasks. Yes
Effectively apply teaching / learning strategies Observation At the start of the session you needed to engage the students more assertively.Refer to my comment under resources.

I feel more explanation of the use of the terms you were describing would be more useful. e.g  when do you need to centre or underline or indent text?. What is meant by justify and why do we do it?

Yes
Communicates effectively with learners Observation Communication with learners was generally effective. You were careful to check that each learner was understanding tasks.  Yes
Manages in an appropriate manner the behaviour of learners Observation There were no major behavioural issues here. The students worked enthusiastically and were helping each other. The major classroom management issue was in gaining the attention of everybody when you were trying to make points relevant to the whole group. Yes
Provides appropriate support and feedback to learners Observation Conscientious support and feedback were provided to individuals Yes

General Comments

Starting the Lesson:-The lesson began with registration and you then got a new student to introduce herself. You found it difficult to get the students focused as they were all busy logging onto the PCs. Insist that the students turn round and pay attention when doing whole group activity. It is a common problem when working with students on PCs that they are more attracted to the screen than to the teacher.

The lesson plan did not fully represent what was being delivered in the session.

It would have been useful for me to have copies of student tasks so I could see how the relate to the lesson plan. Maybe you could provide these next time.

I do feel you have room for improvement. You have a difficult job in trying to meet the diverse needs of differing levels of students. You might wish to think about giving discrete inputs to smaller groups of learners about aspects of word appropriate to their levels. Whilst doing this the rest of the group could be getting on with set tasks
