Ana Gomes, Ethiopia and Portugal: History Repeats Itself

Ana Gomes, is a portuguese Citizen who led the European Union’s Observer Mission during the 2005 elections in Ethiopia. After the election had been blatantly rigged by Ethnocentric Group (TPLF) she boldly informed the world that the election under the undemocratic and unpopular ethnocentric group was not a free and fair one. She further stood alongside the peace loving international community and the victims of the Ethiopian people with great integrity and honesty by denouncing the November 2005 massacre in Addis Ababa.

History Repeats Itself

History repeats itself. Do you know that the first military alliance between two Continents in history was Between Ethiopia and Portugal? The great navigator and Military scientist, Christopher Dagama, son of the famous explorer and discoverer of India Vasco Da Gama traveled to Ethiopia leading a portuguese army to support the Ethiopian King Atse Gelawdios and fought against Gragn Mohamed who was supported by Turks and Arabians between (1541–1543).

Christopher Da Gama and many other Ethiopians and portuguese army members were killed while fighting in bravery in the first incidence. But the alliance force strengthened its troop from Shoa (DebreBirhan) and stormed and successfully defeated Gragn’s army in Gondar at a place called “Woyna Dega”.

The alliance between Ethiopia and Portugal in the 16 Century was a genuine friendship without any other motives like the today’s politics. It is very important to note that there were no colonies in Africa that time and the main reason for their alliance was to defend christians from Grange Mohamed and his supporters who were trying to impose Islam on the Christian Ethiopians. It was during those difficult war Years that our Oromo brothers marched from South, occupied today’s Oromo areas and reached up to Gondar without intervention.
