By October 1935, the Italians had massed 130,000 ground troops in Eritrea; 80,000 in Somalia. They also had shipped 160 planes, 160 tanks, and 620 artillery pieces to East Africa. With these reinforcements, the viceroy and his military commander had some 210,000 ground troops in East Africa—about 100,000 Italians and 110,000 Askaris and Dubats, supplemented by an indeterminate number of bande. Now the fascist is well based to kill barefooted Ethiopians … They confronted about 25,000 armed and organized resistance fighters, 75,000 local guerillas. Employing all their forces in the field and using mustard gas indiscriminately, the Italians could hold the roads and the main towns. But they could not control the countryside. Gojjam exploded in revolt and it raged out of control. Despite raining tons of mustard gas on the region, the Italians were driven from the countryside into a few imperilled garrisons. Disgusted by Italian excesses, Askaris began to desert and join the rebels. Cavallero initiated his operations with confidence. His columns swept through the Gojjam from January to July 1938, under an umbrella of gas-spraying bombers.

These operations killed many Amharas. Dessie fell into the hands of the Italians on 4 April 1936 after three days of long and bloody fighting. Abune Petros, the Bishop of Wollo, marched through the streets of Addis Ababa denouncing the Italian occupation and calling on the people to keep fighting for independence. Many people came out of their houses to support him. However he was soon apprehended and on 30 July 1936 executed by firing squad in a public square, where his statue now stands (now its removed by weyane however, they promised to put it back yet ,we don’t know for how long & when) .The killing of a bishop was unheard of in Ethiopia by that the patriots became more skilled in moral the same time the fascist start hunting religious leaders where ever where they be found ; On 21 May 1937, General P. Badoglio requested Mussolini’s approval for a policy of indirect rule over most of Ethiopia, governing the non-Amharan portions of the empire through their feudal and tribal rulers. Badoglio argued that the Italians should impose direct authority over only the potentially rebellious Amharas and Shoans.

Mussolini rejected these suggestions and ordered the complete subjugation of Ethiopia, as had been done previously in Libya and Somalia. On 23 December, Badoglio received Mussolini’s permission to use mustard gas and immediately employed it.Only massive bombing attacks with explosives and gas finally brought the Ethiopian attacks to a halt on 9 January, 1936. Starting on 29 February, Badoglio unleashed a terror bombing campaign against all Ethiopian towns in the north. The Fascist Of Addis During a ceremony at the Viceregal Palace (Haile Sellassie’s former residence; now Ras Makonnen Hall of Addis Ababa University), on 19 February 1937 (Yekatit 12), two young Ethiopians [now days Eritrean who later killed by tgrayan bandits near to border Sudan in trying to scpae from fascist , lobbed as many as ten grenades into a crowd of Ethiopian and Italian dignitaries attending Graziani. Shortly after the incident, the Italian command ordered all shops closed and shuttered, directed people to return home, and suspended postal and telegraphic communications. Within an hour, the capital was isolated from the world, and its streets were empty. During the afternoon, Addis Abeba’s Fascist party, voted a pogrom against the city’s population.

The slaughter began that night and continued into the next day.Ethiopians were killed indiscriminately, burnt alive in their huts, or shot as they tried to escape. Italian truckers chased people down and then ran them over, or tied their feet to tailgates and dragged them to death. People were beaten and stoned until dead. Women were scourged, men emasculated, and children crushed underfoot; throats were cut, people were disemboweled and left to die, or hung, or stabbed to death. A relatively large percentage of the victims came from the traditional ruling class and the Young Ethiopians, [Marcus A History oF Ethiopia, p, 148-149 The Ethiopian intellectuals who had rallied to the new order were rounded up and shot. Concentration camps were established and, over the following months, tens of thousands of Amharan notables were incarcerated under appalling conditions. From February to July, new search-and-destroy operations were carried out, aimed at cmshing the Amharas and savaging the Coptic clergy. In his nineteen months as viceroy of Ethiopia, Graziani had killed approximately 300,000 Ethiopians before the Duke of Aosta replaced him in late December 1937.But despite his brutal campaigns, Graziani had not crushed the Ethiopian nationalist uprising. Between June 1940 and November 1941, some 5,200 Italians and 15,100 Askaris died fighting in East Africa.

When added to all their losses since October 1935, the Italians lost 25,000 to 30,000 dead in their six-year conflict. In a war of about the same duration, the Italians suffered, in proportion to their population, losses doublé those of the Americans in Vietnam. In the same period, Askari and Dubat dead numbered about 50,000. Perhaps another 50,000 bande feil while serving the Italians. But these heavy losses were vastly outweighed by those of the Ethiopians. Between De Bono’s invasion of Ethiopia and Nasi’s surrender, the Italians killed or caused the deaths of about 700,000 Ethiopians. In other words, between 1935 and 1941, something like 11 percent to 13 percent of the Ethiopian population died as a result of the Italian invasion; a much higher proportion of the Amharas feil. As a percentage of population, Amharan losses equal even those of the Russians in World War II..
